Maiden Win For Verhoeven

Saturday 4th of January saw the Super Rods take to Geelong’s Avalon Raceway for the running of the 3CS Cup. It was Paul Verhoeven who took his maiden feature win when he led home Michael Coad and Allan Pitcher.

The first heat of the night saw Coad with the win ahead of Corey Deglaitis and Paul Singleton rounding out the top three.  In Heat two it was Gerrard Mabbitt who claimed his first Super Rod heat win, leading home Coad and Pitcher.

The top six drivers contest a series of pole shuffles that would determine their starting positions for the final. The first match up saw Neville Gange and Verhoeven set to duel, Verhoeven was the victor and moved ahead to the next challenger. In this match up it was Verhoeven who marched forward leading Singleton to the flag. The next pairing saw Verhoeven take on Deglaitis who proved too strong taking the early lead and the eventual win.

Deglaitis was unable to overcome the next competitor in Mabbitt. With the final challenge saw Mabbitt against Coad for position one. It was Coad who was able to secure the win and retain his starting position.

The line for the final saw Coad and Mabbitt making up the front row, they were followed by Deglaitis, Verhoeven, Singleton, Gange, Alex Bath, Pitcher and Peter Duynhoven.

At the fall of the green it was Coad who made the best of the starts leading away from Mabbitt, Deglaitis and Gange. The race came to a caution in the second lap when the car of Mabbitt collected an infield tyre leaving him with front end damage and ending his night. The following lap contact between Gange and Deglaitis saw the race again halted with the later sent to the rear.

Coad continue to lead the way from the restart ahead of Gange and Verhoeven. With plenty of close racing Verhoeven and Pitcher were able to account for a Gange misstep moving into second and third. After apply heavy pressure on the leader Verhoeven able to seize the lead with six laps remaining and continued on to take is maiden feature win ahead of Coad, Pitcher, Gange, Bath, Duynhoven and Paul Singleton.

The next meeting for Super Rods will be on Saturday the 18th of January at Heytesbury Stockfeed’s Simpson Speedway where the Super Rods will compete against the SDAV Hotrod’s for the running of the Southern Rod Showdown.
