Super Rod Cup Win For May

The Super Rods took to Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium Premier Speedway on Saturday 2nd of April for the running of the prestigious Super Rod Cup. Jamie May of Hopper’s Crossing was the victor leading the race in its entirety with Michael Coad finishing second and Stan Marco Jnr rounding out the three.

 

In the first heat of the night, it was Stan Marco Jnr who secured the win ahead of Shaun Walsh and Luke Cole. May seize the lead with two laps remaining in the second heat with Stan Marco Snr second and Jason Kavanagh third.

 

It was an all the ways win for Walsh in heat three with Daniel Hookway and Stan Marco Jnr in third. The final heat of the night saw Neville Gange take the win from Paul Verhoeven and May home in third.

 

The grid for the 20 lap Super Rod Cup saw Walsh and May making up the front row, they were followed by Stan Marco Jnr, Verhoeven, Gange, Cole, Gant Stansfield, Kavanagh, Hookway, Tommy Marco, Michael Coad, David Duynhoven and George Woolstencroft.

 

At the drop of the green it was Walsh who led the field away with May taking to the lead on the highline as they exited turn two, with the top five cars jostling for position it was three wide as they completed the first lap with May narrowly ahead of Walsh, Stan Marco Jnr closely followed by Verhoeven and Gange. May continued to set the pace creating some space from his pursuers in Stan Marco Jnr with Walsh third.

 

The race came to a caution in lap ten when the car of Hookway turned around seeing the field regrouped, with a yellow two laps later when Tommy Marco spun. May continued to set the pace ahead of Stan Marco Jnr, Walsh, Gange and Coad who had moved forward from his 12th starting position. The battle for third saw Walsh, Gange and Coad locked in a fierce battle, with Coad moving into third with five laps remaining.

 

With the checker in sight, it was May who was holding out a determined Stan Marco Jnr, with Coad making a turn three challenge to move into second and apply heavy pressure on the leader. However, it was May taking the much deserved win having not set a foot wrong the whole race with Coad second and Stan Marco Jnr rounding out the podium, they were followed by Walsh, Gange, Stansfield, Verhoeven, Tommy Marco, Cole and Duynhoven.

 

The Super Rods will next be in action over the Easter long weekend, where they will contest the Max Dumesny Motorsports Super Rod Easter Trail competing at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway on Good Friday 15th of April, Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway on Saturday 16th April and concluding at Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium Premier Speedway on Sunday 17th of April.
