McKenzie Prevails At Mount

Saturday 3rd of April saw the Super Rod’s travel to Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway for night two of the Max Dumesny Motorsport’s Super Rod Easter Trail where it was Peterborough’s Ewan McKenzie who narrowly claimed the win ahead of Michael Coad and Billy Grist.


The first heat of the night saw a green to checker win for McKenzie when he led home Howard Stansfield Gerrard Mabbitt.  Coad went flag to flag in the second heat ahead of Grist and Paul Verhoeven third. Heat three saw Jamie May emerge victorious when he led home Stan Marco Jnr and Coad.


The starting grid for saw Coad and May making up the front row next came McKenzie, Marco Jnr, Verhoeven, Grist, Stansfield, Dane Court, George Woolstencroft and Allan Pitcher. With Gerrard Mabbitt out with engine issues and Jacob Pitcher out with gremlins.


At the drop of the green, it was Coad who set the pace leading away from May and McKenzie. Super Rod drivers put on a brilliant display of driving as a number cars were locked in tight battles. In lap four McKenzie made his way past May, before a caution saw the field regrouped when the car of Allan Pitcher stranded on the track.


From the restart it was Coad from McKenzie, May, Marco Jnr, Verhoeven and Grist. Coad continued to set the pace with McKenzie nipping at his heels looking for a way by and with six laps remaining McKenzie dove underneath Coad and into the lead, however not ready to give up the lead Coad resumed control on the following turn. With Coad running the pole line, McKenzie set his pursuit on the highline of the track, however lost traction and allowed May to challenge for second. With two laps remaining Coad continued to lead but the McKenzie and May were right on his tail with Grist also entering the fray. As the drivers made their final turn of the race it was Coad from McKenzie with a fast-finishing Grist you could throw a blanket on them. In a nail biting finish it was McKenzie who seized the win by a mere 0.068 of a second, from Coad and Grist rounding out the podium, they were followed by May, Verhoeven, Court, Marco Jnr, Stansfield and Woolstencroft.
