May Takes Showdown Victory
Last Saturday night the 18th of January saw the Super Rods take to Heytesbury Stockfeed’s Simpson Speedway for the running of the 2020 Southern Rod Showdown where they went head to head against the SDAV Hot Rods. It was Super Rod competitor Jamie May who claimed the honours when he led home the SDAV’s Shannon Meakins and fellow Super Rod driver Neville Gange.
In the first heat of the night Michael Coad made the most of his front row starting position taking a flag to flag win ahead of SDAV pair Stan Marco Snr and Tom Marco.
SDAV’s Stan Marco Jnr claimed the win in the second heat, with Peter Duynhoven and May after fierce battle for second and third.
It was Stan Marco Snr who took a comfortable win in heat three when he led home ahead of SDAV’s Shannon Meakins and Gange.
Allan Pitcher in the SDAV car of Jenkins was able to maintain his lead with May hot on his heels with Paul Verhoeven rounding out the top three.
The front row of the final was an all Marco affair with Stan Sr starting from position one with Stan Jnr from two, they were followed by May, Coad, Pitcher, Meakins, Duynhoven, Tom Marco, Gange, Adrian Rieck, Verhoeven, Paul Singleton, Daniel Mills, Duane Cordina, Sally Woolstencroft, Geoff Long and Dane Court.
With 20 laps on the board it was Stan Marco Jnr who got the best of the starts leading the way from May, Stan Marco Snr and Coad. With barely one lap completed the race came to a halt when the car of Duynhoven clipped the infield tyre launching the car into a roll and ending on his roof.
A complete restart was called and this time it was Marco Snr who made the best of the starts leading away from May, Coad and Marco Jnr. With May running the highline this allowed Coad to move into second in lap three with all three leaders engaged in a three way battle.
In lap six May took the opportunity to seize the low line and moved into the lead with Marco Snr and Coad still in hot pursuit before a caution saw the field regrouped after the car of Pitcher spun. Contact between Marco Snr and Coad at the restart saw stewards deeming Coad as the primary cause sending him to the rear of field.
With May now leading the field from Meakins, Marco Snr and Gange. May had been able to establish a handy break before a red-light stoppage occurred with five laps remaining when the car of Marco Jnr clipped the wall sending him over and with fire coming from the car, Simpson race officials were quick on the scene and extinguished the flames.
As the race continued May was never headed and took a much-deserved win ahead of Meakins, Gange rounding out the podium, then came Coad, Verhoeven, Stan Marco Snr, Pitcher, Court, Cordina, Long, Singleton, Woolstencroft and Mills.
The Super Rods will next be in action over the Australia Day long weekend where they will take to Warrnnambool’s Premier Speedway Sungold Stadium as support to all nights at the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic on the 24th, 25th and 26th of January.
