Marco Jnr Wins Snoopy's Super Rod Slam

Bannockburn’s Stan Marco Jnr secured the win in the second running of Snoopy’s Super Rod Slam at Heytesbury Stockfeed’s Simpson Speedway on Saturday 15th of January.  Marco Jnr led the race in its entirety to claim victory with Colac’s Neville Gange home second and Lancefield’s Shaun Walsh rounding out the podium.

In the first heat of the night, it was Gange win in a tight battle with Paul Verhoeven with Gerrard Mabbitt rounding out the top three. Mabbitt joined the upside-down club prior to the commencement of heat two as the drivers finished hot laps when the car in front slowed suddenly, he was unable to avoid contact causing his car to dig in and roll over. It was Jamie May who claimed a green to checker win ahead of Marco Jnr and Verhoeven. The final heat of the night saw Jason Kavanagh with an all the ways win ahead of Stan Marco Jnr and Dane Court third.

With the grid set for the running of the 20 lap Snoopy’s Super Rod Slam it was Marco Jnr taking pole position with Verhoeven on his outside, they were followed by Gange, May, Kavanagh, Court, Walsh, Luke Cole, Mabbitt, Peter Duynhoven, Megan Payne, Bob Wilson, Luke Gilbert and Jacob Pitcher. With Stan Marco Snr encountering an engine missfire which saw him sidelined from the event.

From the drop of the green, it was Marco Jnr who jumped to the lead with Verhoeven, Gange, May and Kavanagh in hot pursuit. Gange was able to move his way forward and into second with Kavanagh moving into third the following lap. Marco Jnr continued to set the pace while the battle behind ensued, however the race came to a caution in lap ten when the car of Pitcher encountered an electrical gremlin leaving him stranded on the track.

At the restart it was Marco Jnr leading the way with Gange, Kavanagh, Court and Walsh. In lap 13 Court saw front end component failure which drew him up the wall and over bringing on the red light.   With seven laps remaining and the field regrouped Marco Jnr held his nerve at the restart while Gange made the most of restart to apply pressure to the leader, they were followed by Kavanagh and Walsh, with Kavanagh running high in lap 15 allowing Walsh to move into third. But with the checker in sight, it was Marco who had not set a foot wrong who went onto take the win ahead of Gange and Walsh, they were followed by May, Kavanagh, Verhoeven, Cole, Mabbitt, Wilson, Duynhoven, Gilbert and Payne.

The Super Rods will be in action next weekend at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway Sungold Stadium where they will support the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic on Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd of January.
