Podger Takes Hamilton Win

Cobden’s Leigh Podger who took an all the ways win to greet the checker first when the Super Rod’s took to Hamilton’s Western Speedway on Saturday night. Podger was able to hold off the fast finishing pair of Shaun Walsh and Howard Stansfield.

 

In the first heat of the night it was Troy Gleeson who secured the win ahead of Corey Deglaitis with rookie driver Paul Verhoeven home in third position. Podger took the win in heat two with Michael Coad second and Walsh third.

 

It was back to back heat wins for Podger after taking the win in heat three ahead of George Woolstencroft and Deglaitis, the race came to a premature end when the car of Verhoeven made heavy contact with the wall. Walsh was the victor in the final heat of the night taking the win ahead of Stansfield and Gleeson.

 

The line-up for the final saw Podger and Gleeson making up the front row, with Walsh and Deglaitis, then came Woolstencroft, Stansfield, Coad, Amy Duynhoven and Damian Falkingham. With the cars of Neville Simper unable to start with clutch issues and Verhoeven with substantial rear end damage.

 

At the fall of the green it was Podger who made the best of the starts with Gleeson and Walsh in hot pursuit. In lap four the race came to a caution as the car of Deglaitis became stricken on the track after making contact with the wall and breaking the front axle in half. From the restart it was again Podger, Gleeson and Walsh. The pursuing pair continued to apply heavy pressure to the leader and in lap ten Walsh was able to capitalise on Gleeson washing high and moved forward into second position. During this time the cars of Woolstencroft, Stansfield and Coad were also providing some very entertaining racing. 

 

In lap thirteen the car of Stansfield moved into third, with the yellow on when the car of Coad spun. With the field to complete a two lap dash it was Podger continued to lead the way with Walsh and Stansfield leaving no stone unturned as they attempted to thwart the leader. However Podger was able to maintain his lead and greet the checker first ahead of Walsh, Stansfield, Gleeson, Coad, Duynhoven and Falkingham.

 

The next meeting for the Super Rods will be on Saturday 19th of March when the Super Rods travel to Portland’s Southern 500 Speedway for the running of the Bill Campbell Memorial.
