McKenzie Takes Super Rod Cup Victory - 30 Years After His First

Peterborough’s Ewan McKenzie secured the Super Rod Cup win on Sunday night at Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium Premier Speedway. McKenzie was able to take the chequered flag in the prestigious event for the second time taking the win 30 years after his first win in 1987 having come out of retirement in 2012 leading home Shaun Walsh and Darryl Nelson.

McKenzie took the win in the first heat of the night ahead of Nelson with Adrian Rieck home in third. Heat two saw an all the ways win to Michael Coad who led home Jason Kavanagh and Troy Gleeson.

It was a green to checker win for Leigh Podger in the third heat when he led home Kavanagh, and Howard Stansfield.  In the final heat it was Walsh who took a flag to flag win ahead of Paul Verhoeven and McKenzie.

The line-up for the 25 lap final saw high point scorer McKenzie out of position one with Kavanagh on his outside, they were followed by Walsh, Nelson, Podger, Coad, Verhoeven, Gleeson, Stansfield, Rieck, Corey Deglaitis, Paul Singleton, Neville Simper, Sally Woolstencroft and Damien Falkingham.

McKenzie made the best of the starts leading away from Kavanagh, Walsh, Coad, and Nelson, in lap four the car of Verhoeven spun with Gleeson unable to avoid bringing the race to a caution with both cars out of the event.

From the restart McKenzie led the pack with Kavanagh in pursuit, on lap nine Coad was able to make his way into second with the top three putting on a display close racing, before Coad withdrew from the race in lap fifteen.

McKenzie was able to establish a break from the field with Kavanagh, Walsh, Nelson and Podger in pursuit. In lap twenty the car of Kavanagh came to a halt as the car’s engine detonated.

With the race again underway McKenzie led away from Walsh and Nelson with Walsh applying pressure to the leader however at the fall of the checker it was McKenzie who secured a well-deserved win ahead of Walsh, Nelson, Podger, Deglaitis, Rieck, Falkingham, Woolstencroft, Simper and Singleton.
