McKenzie Wins At Swan Hill

Last Sunday night saw the Super Rods in action at Swan Hill’s Sonic Speedway for their final hit out of the season, where it was Peterborough's veteran racer Ewan McKenzie who took the victory ahead of Leigh Podger and Paul Verhoeven third.


With drivers contesting three of the four heats each heat racing got underway. In the first heat of the night it was Adrian Rieck who took a green to checker win ahead of Jason Kavanagh and McKenzie. McKenzie was the victor in heat two when he led home Neville Gange and Podger.


McKenzie again claimed the win in heat three when he led home Michael Coad and Kavanagh. The final heat saw Howard Stansfield secure a flag to flag win ahead of Podger and Verhoeven.


The line up for the final saw McKenzie and Podger making up the front row, they were followed by Verhoeven, Coad, Gange, Stansfield, Corey Deglaitis, Duane Cordina, Paul Singleton, Alex Bath, Sally Woolstencroft and rookie Daryl Bottoms.

McKenzie made the best of the starts leading away from Podger, Kavanagh, Coad and Verhoeven. In the third lap the car of Woolstencroft came to a halt bringing the race to a caution. From the restart McKenzie once again led away from Podger, Kavanagh, Coad and Verhoeven, before in lap nine Coad spun sending him to the rear of the field.

McKenzie continued to lead the way with Podger, Kavanagh, Verhoeven and Rieck in pursuit with Stansfield accounting for Rieck in lap twelve. They continued in this fashion until lap eighteen when the engine of the Kavanagh sustained a fatal detonation as the car came to a halt.

With a two lap dash to the final it was McKenzie who secured the checker ahead of Podger, Verhoeven, Stansfield, Rieck, Gange, Deglaitis, Coad, Singleton and Bath.
