Coad Wins Col Grist Memorial
Last Saturday night saw the Super Rods in action at Darlington’s Mid-Western Speedway for the running of the Col Grist Memorial. It was Cobden’s Michael Coad in the Nastasi racing machine who added his name to the honour role when he took the win ahead of Adrian Rieck and Rod Smith.
In the first heat of the night it was Jason Kavanagh with an all the way win leading home Rieck and Ewan McKenzie. McKenzie was the victor in heat two holding off a close finishing Coad with Smith rounding out the top three. Coad took a flag to flag win in the final heat leading home Neville Gange and Rieck.
The line-up for the 20 lap final saw Rieck from position one with Coad on his outside, they were followed by McKenzie, Smith, Kavanagh, Cordina, Singleton and Gange.
At the fall of the green it was Coad who made the best of the starts leading away from Rieck, McKenzie, Smith and Kavanagh; with McKenzie moving into second the following lap. In lap eight the race came to a caution when the cars of McKenzie and Singleton tangled leaving the latter unable to continue.
Coad led away from the restart ahead of Rieck and Smith, before a race stoppage in lap ten when the car of McKenzie rolled on its side, McKenzie suffered minimal damage and was able to resume the race.
With ten laps remaining it was Coad who was able to make a slight break in the field to take a deserving win ahead of Rieck, Smith, McKenzie, Gange, Kavanagh and Cordina.
The Super Rod’s next meeting will be on Sunday 11th of June at Swan Hill’s Sonic Speedway.
