McKenzie Wins At Avalon

Last Saturday night saw the Super Rods in action at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway, where it was Peterborough’s Ewan McKenzie who secured the win ahead of Andrew Howard and Allan Pitcher.

In the first heat of the night it was an all the ways win to Pitcher when he led home McKenzie and Adrian Rieck. Tanner took a flag to flag win in the second heat ahead of McKenzie and Rieck rounding out the top three. The final heat of the night saw Howard take a convincing win ahead of Paul Verhoeven and Rod Smith.

The drivers contested a pole shuffle with a series of two lap dashes. The first duel was between Smith and Verhoeven with the later the victor who went on to challenge Howard in the second challenge with Howard greeting the flag and maintaining his position on the grid.

Next came Rieck who was unable to hold out the hard charging Howard, with Pitcher also succumbing to Howard. Howard continued his march forward on the grid when he defeated Tanner before the battle for position one between McKenzie saw Howard with the latter succeeding and taking pole position.

The line-up for the final saw Howard from pole with McKenzie on his outside, they were followed by Tanner, Pitcher, Rieck, Verhoeven, Smith, Darryl Nelson, Michael Coad, Sally Woolstencroft, Peter Duynhoven and Steve Robertson.

It was McKenzie who made the best of the starts leading away from Howard, Pitcher and Tanner, with Howard seizing the lead in the second lap.

A race stoppage in lap six saw the field regrouped with McKenzie making the most of the restart and regaining the lead from Howard, Pitcher, Tanner and Rieck. A stoppage in lap 12 saw Tanner withdraw with engine issues, with McKenzie still leading the field.

McKenzie and Howard were able to make a break from the pack and the pair battled it out, however it was McKenzie who greeted the checker ahead of Howard, Pitcher, Coad, Rieck, Verhoeven, Smith, Duynhoven, Woolstencroft and Robertson.

The next meeting for Super Rods is at Heytesbury Stockfeed’s Simpson of January. Speedway for round 1 of the Western Cup Series this Saturday 13th.
