A Good Friday For Gleeson

The Super Rods were in action at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway on Good Friday where it was Laang’s Troy Gleeson who took the win in the 1134 3CS Cup ahead of Darryl Nelson and Adrian Rieck.

In the first heat of the night it was Nelson who took an all the way win ahead of Geoff Long and Rieck. Heat two saw Michael Coad go flag to flag with Jason Kavanagh finishing second and Neville Simper third.

Rieck secured the win in heat three with Nelson second and Rod Smith home in third. In the final heat of the night it was a green to checker win for Gleeson ahead of Paul Verhoeven and Kavanagh.

The grid for the final saw Nelson and Rieck making up the front row, they were followed by Gleeson, Kavanagh, Verhoeven, Coad, Smith, Corey Deglaitis, Sally Woolstencroft, Paul Singleton, Leigh Podger, Rob Richardson and Ewan McKenzie. With Long and Simper both unable to take their positions after sustaining front end damage, and Neville Gange with engine issues.

At the fall of the green it was Nelson who made the best of the starts leading away from Rieck, Gleeson, Verhoeven and Kavanagh, with Gleeson elevating himself to second in lap two.

They continued in this fashion until lap five when the car of Singleton sustained front end damage and the race came to a caution. It was Nelson who led away from the restart with Gleeson hot on his heels, with Gleeson taking the lead the following lap.  Gleeson was able to establish a handy break while the battle for the minors between Nelson and Rieck provided plenty of entertainment, with Verhoeven, Coad and Kavanagh also dicing.

Gleeson secured a much deserved win ahead of Nelson and Rieck, followed by Verhoeven, Coad, Kavanagh, Deglaitis, McKenzie, Smith, Podger and Woolstencroft.

The Super Rods will be in action at Premier Speedway on Sunday night for the running of the Super Rod Cup, with their Victorian Super Rod Title next Saturday 22nd April at Mortlake’s Mid-West Speedway.
