Kavanagh King At Avalon
Saturday the 18th of March saw the Super Rods take to Geelong’s Avalon Raceway where it was Jason Kavanagh behind the wheel of the Grayland racing machine who secured the win ahead of Andrew Howard and Ewan McKenzie.
In the first heat of the night it was Andrew Howard who took an all the way win ahead of Allan Pitcher and Paul Verhoeven. Heat two was action packed with the car of Craig Devlin rolling over as the cars ran three wide around the track. Corey Deglaitis took the win ahead of Kavanagh and Geoff Long.
Coad set a blistering pace in the third heat taking win ahead of Troy Gleeson and Howard. In the final heat of the night it was McKenzie who claimed the win ahead of Neville Gange and Kavanagh.
The line up for the final saw Howard and Kavanagh making up the front row, with McKenzie and Deglaitis starting from three and four, they were followed by Gange, Pitcher, Gleeson, Verhoeven, Coad, Darryl Nelson, Long, Rod Smith, Adrian Rieck, Paul Singleton, Sally Woolstencroft and Amy Duynhoven.
It was Howard who made the best of the starts, ahead of Kavanagh, Deglaitis and McKenzie in hot pursuit, however the race came to a caution in the second lap when the car of Gange rode the wheel of a competitor’s car and collided heavily with the wall.
Howard led away at the restart from Kavanagh and Deglaitis, until lap seven when the car of Coad slowed suddenly with rear suspension failure and the cars of Nelson, Pitcher and Gleeson were unable to avoid contact, Rieck also sustained damage after hitting the wall when the rest of the cars slowed. Coad, Gleeson and Rieck were unable to re-join the race.
At the restart Kavanagh was able to capitalise and was able to seize the lead from Howard while McKenzie was able to move into third place ahead of Deglaitis. Kavanagh was able break free from the pursing pack and took the win ahead of Howard and McKenzie, they were followed by Deglaitis, Nelson, Pitcher, Verhoeven, Long, Smith, Singleton, Woolstencroft and Duynhoven.
The Super Rod’s next meeting is on Saturday the 8th of April where they will return to Heytesbury Stock Feed’s Simpson Speedway.
