Coad Takes Col Grist Memorial

The running of the 2021 Col Grist Memorial saw Cobden’s Michael Coad secure the honours when the Super Rods competed at Mortlake’s Mid Western Speedway. Coad was able to hold out Dane Court and Stan Marco Jnr.

The afternoon saw Court and Billy Grist compete for the first time in a race named in honour of their Grandfather Col Grist. It also saw a number of newcomers to the class with Daniel Hookway, Jamie Ackland and Daniel Mills make their Super Rod debut.

With drivers contesting in two of the three heats, the first heat of the night it was Coad who secured an all the ways win ahead of Jacob Pitcher and Mills. Heat two went the way of Stan Marco Jnr claiming the win ahead of Jamie May and Coad. It was a flag-to-flag win for Court in the third heat when he led home Neville Gange and Pitcher.

The line up for the Col Grist Memorial saw Coad and Pitcher making up the front row, they were followed by Court, Stan Marco Jnr, Gange, May, Mills, Raedyn Marco and Grist set for 20 laps. With Thomas Marco, Hookway and Ackland unable to take their starting positions.

At the fall of the green, it was Coad that led the field away before Pitcher was able to move forward on the pole line as the cars exited turn two. With Coad applying heavy pressure to the rookie Pitcher, the battle behind was also providing plenty of entertainment between Court, Stan Marco Jnr and Gange.

In lap five Coad’s persistence paid off when he moved into the lead, however this was short lived when the race came to a caution when the car of May spun on the tricky surface seeing them revert to the previous lap.

From the restart it was Pitcher, Coad, Stan Marco Jnr, Court and Gange. As the car of Pitcher entered turn three, he lost control car around in the front of the field brining on another caution.  Coad set the pace with Stan Marco Jnr leading the chase, with Court and Gange also in fierce pursuit.

With five laps remaining Grist moved forward into second, Court threw everything at the leader but it was Coad who held strong to take the win with Court second and Stan Marco Jnr rounding out the top three, they were followed by Gange, Pitcher, Grist, Mills and Raedyn Marco.

The next scheduled meeting for Super Rods will see them return to Mid-Western Speedway Mortlake on Saturday 22nd of May after their 8th of May meeting has been cancelled.
