Pitcher Perfect at Avalon

The Super Rods took to Geelong’s Avalon Raceway on Saturday the 12th of December, where Bannockburn’s Allan Pitcher took his first ever feature race win at his home track, ahead of Inverleigh’s Corey Deglaitis and Scott’s Creeks Peter Duynhoven. In the first heat of the night it was Pitcher who won convincingly from Ewan McKenzie with Deglaitis home in third. Heat two saw and all the way win to Darryl Nelson when he led home Shawn Duynhoven with Andrew Howard making up the top three. The third heat saw a dice at the front between Rob Richardson and Craig Devlin, on lap six Shawn Duynhoven made a brave outside pass to run around the outside of the dicing pair, to win from Richardson with Shaun Walsh moving into third. Howard took out the last heat of the night ahead of Pitcher and Deglaitis. The line-up for the final saw equal point scorers Shawn Duynhoven and Pitcher making up the front row, they were followed by Howard, Nelson, Deglaitis, McKenzie, Peter Duynhoven, Richardson, George Woolstencroft, Devlin, Geoff Long, Troy Gleeson, Michael Cunningham and Peter Bodger. Walsh unable to start the final with power steering issues.  At the first attempt at a start the cars of Devlin and Bodger tangled leaving Richardson with a flat right rear tyre and unable to continue. At the restart Shawn Duynhoven made heavy contact with the wall during the first lap inverting his machine. With 19 laps to go the field restarted with the highlight of the race being dice between Super Rod veterans of Nelson and McKenzie while running in fourth position, McKenzie having the better of turns one and two, allowing him to pull up level with Peter Duynhoven on the back straight, however in lap three both Duynhoven and Nelson were able to pass McKenzie and pull ahead. With McKenzie again moving forward on the Geelong end turn, they continued in this fashion for almost ten laps. At the fall of the checker it was Pitcher who was able to hold out a fast finishing Deglaitis with Duynhoven leading Nelson and McKenzie across the line for the minors. They were followed by Cunningham, Woolstencroft, Devlin, Gleeson and Bodger.  The next race meeting for the Super Rods will be at Laang Speedway on Tuesday the 29th of December
